Hips Hips Hooray!

Body Image.

Body image has always been a significant aspect of human life, shaping our self-perception and how we interact with the world. Throughout history, the role and importance of body image have evolved dramatically, influenced by cultural, societal, and personal factors. We find ourselves in a unique era where, despite having vastly unique bodies, we often succumb to societal pressures and expectations regarding looks, shapes, and abilities.

The Reality.

The truth is, we are all born into these 'meat suits' that carry us through this one lifetime. We work with what we are handed, each body unique in its form and function. Yet, no human is completely satisfied with their body. Cultural demands and societal expectations place immense pressure on all of us, fostering a sense of inadequacy. We are all perfectly imperfect, but suffering ensues when we place expectations on ourselves or allow external expectations to influence our self-worth, often unconsciously.

Awareness.

The first step towards a healthier relationship with our bodies is awareness. Recognize how you feel about your body—whether those feelings are positive, negative, or somewhere in between. Understanding your feelings is crucial to beginning the journey toward acceptance and celebration of your body.

We Must Celebrate.

Despite the challenges, it's essential to celebrate our bodies. Our bodies, in all their diverse forms and capabilities, are gifts. They are our constant companions, never leaving our side, witnessing every moment of our lives. They support us through our experiences and growth, evolving with us. It's time we raise a toast to ourselves and our bodies—our forever 'meat suits.'

Honoring Your Body: A Meditation

To honor your body and cultivate a sense of gratitude and celebration, try the following meditation:

Begin by finding a comfortable seated or lying position. Close your eyes if that feels right for you. Take a deep breath in, and as you exhale, allow your body to relax and settle into the support beneath you.

With each breath, feel yourself grounding down, connecting with the earth. Notice the points of contact where your body meets the floor or chair. Allow these points to anchor you in this moment.

Bring your attention to your breath. Feel the rise and fall of your chest, the expansion and contraction of your abdomen. With each inhale, invite a sense of calm and peace. With each exhale, release any tension or worry.

Now, bring to mind a milestone you've achieved with this breath, with this body. Perhaps it's a certification, an education, or crossing a finish line. Feel the pride and accomplishment that comes with this achievement.

With this breath, this body, I [achieved this certification, education, crossed that finish line].

Allow yourself to feel gratitude for your body, for its strength and resilience that made this achievement possible.

Next, think of the relationships you've formed through your journey. The best friends you've met, the family you've created, the community of loving people that surrounds you. Let your heart swell with gratitude for these connections.

With this breath, this body, I [met my best friends, created a family, met a community of loving people].

Acknowledge the hard moments or seasons of life you've made it through. Remember a specific challenge you faced, and recognize the strength and perseverance that carried you through.

With this breath, this body, I made it through [this hard moment or season]. I am here.

Allow this breath, this moment, to remind you of your power, your compassion, and your strength. These qualities have brought you to this very moment, and they will continue to support you moving forward.

Take a deep breath in, and as you exhale, soften. Let go of any remaining tension. Allow yourself to rest in this space of gratitude and celebration.

Know that your body is a vessel of strength, resilience, and beauty. Each breath, each moment, is a testament to your journey and your growth.

When you're ready, gently bring your awareness back to the room. Wiggle your fingers and toes, and slowly open your eyes. Carry this sense of grounding, gratitude, and celebration with you as you move through the rest of your day.
